Refreshment of KAMIOKANDE

 

A research project to discover  “supernova background neutrinos” for the first time in the world has started 2020. This research project aims to discover neutrinos emitted by supernova explosions and accumulated in the universe during the 13.8 billion years from the early universe to the present, and to elucidate the evolution of the universe.

The project will handled under the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Basic Research A, Project No. 20H00162.

In August 2020, Gadolinium, a rare earth element, was added to Super-Kamiokande, a neutrino detector operated by the University of Tokyo’s Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, and the new instrument began its observations. This improvement made possible to observe the supernova background neutrinos with high sensitivity. The research is planned to dramatically improve the accuracy of the supernova background neutrino observation in Super-Kamiokande by promoting new particle and nuclear physics experiments and feeding back the results.
